Born in Belgrade, Serbia, art photographer Tomislav Nacevski has dedicated his life to capturing extraordinary moments in nature through an approach rooted in pure realism, technical precision, and artistic vision. His photographic journey began with formal studies in photography, reproduction photography, and retouching, laying the foundation for a career that has spanned traditional black-and-white and color photography to contemporary digital processes.
Since presenting his first solo exhibition, Reality on the Edge of Fantasy, in 1990, Nacevski has pursued what he describes as the discovery of unique moments in nature—fleeting scenes that exist only once and can never be recreated. This philosophy has shaped his identity as an artist and his enduring commitment to observing, documenting, and preserving the extraordinary within the real world.
His work received international recognition in 1992, when his distinctive photographic style was praised as unique during a global photography contest focused on nature and the environment, sponsored by Kodak and Canon. Despite the interruption of his international opportunities during the sanctions imposed on the former Yugoslavia, Nacevski continued to develop his artistic practice and exhibit his work.
In 2025, he announced a new chapter in his career with Transition, an exhibition marking his move into digital photography. That same year, he received the Tesla Spirit Award 2025, with his new collection subsequently featured at an exhibition at the New Yorker Hotel in New York in January 2026.
Today, Nacevski is preparing new collections and exhibitions using photographic paper designed for exceptional longevity, continuing his pursuit of images intended to endure for generations.
In this ArtGulf interview, Nacevski reflects on his artistic philosophy, the evolution of photographic technology, and his lifelong mission to become a witness and collector of moments that, through photography, can be preserved forever.
You studied photography, reproduction photography, and retouching in Belgrade before beginning your artistic career. How did your journey into art begin, and what first inspired you to pursue photography as a means of artistic expression?
My first inspirations were unique moments in the nature. It was started by “coincidence” one early morning on my way to work. At that time I was working for the national airlines. I spot a sunlight in the mist above green grass.. and literally my inspiration “explode” like a ballon full of that”.. And I started shoting with my camera, Leica, at that time.

Your artistic journey began with black-and-white photography before moving into color photography and the Cibachrome and Ilfochrome processes. How have these different techniques shaped your artistic vision, and what has remained constant in your approach to photography over the years?
Yes it is like that. In first period of time what I I have been recognized like inspitation, remain my way of looking around me, 360 degrees, literally. And become my personal style of making Art.
In your first solo exhibition, Reality on the Edge of Fantasy, you began exploring what you describe as unique moments in nature that happen “now and never again.” What draws you to these fleeting moments, and how do you recognize when a particular scene deserves to become a work of art?
My generator of inspirations is and will be always, what sun is doing with light, like a greatest painter, ever, on water surfacies, sky, clouds, grounds..coloring and making all kind of different contrasts, all the time constantly. Making this moments which I am spotting and catching.

In the year 2025, you introduced a new chapter in your career with Transition, an exhibition featuring a large-scale digital photograph. How has the transition from traditional photographic processes to digital photography influenced your creative possibilities, and how do you preserve the realism that is central to your work?
Yes, everything has changed, technically, but digatal photography become ready to replace traditional photography. Actually, the difference is only “new tool”. Pure realisam in my work remain the same and it will be forever.

You are now preparing a new series of artworks using photographic paper designed to last more than 200 years, combining large-scale enlargements with traditional gallery formats. What would you like audiences to discover in these upcoming works, and what legacy do you hope to leave through your photography?
In big enlargements is new approach to have more spoting details and atmosphere, as well.
My legace is my Artwork, which preserves all this moments in which I enjoyed and wll enjoy. It is a great privilege to be part of that and to feel like you are witnessing greatest moments which are universe masterpieces.

In an era when digital technology and artificial intelligence are transforming photography and visual art, how do you see the difference between your approach to pure realism and digitally created images? What do you believe gives a photograph its authenticity and artistic value?
There is only one pure reality in this world, all others are not existing, at all. AI and digital tools are creating non existing worlds..artificial ones. We have a choice to choose, reality or.. Matrix.
