Marcos López (Santa Fe, Argentina, 1958) is one of the most recognized photographers and visual artists in contemporary Latin American art. Since he began photographing in 1978, he has developed a distinctive artistic language that combines vivid colors, humor, theatricality, and references to popular culture to explore the contradictions, symbols, and identity of Latin America.
His work, associated with the movements of Pop Latino and Sub-realismo Criollo, transforms everyday scenes and recognizable characters into visual compositions that challenge the conventions of traditional photography. Through carefully constructed staged scenes, López offers a critical and ironic perspective on society, consumerism, and the cultural imagery of the region.
Throughout his career, he has exhibited internationally and published influential books, including Pop Latino and Sub-realismo Criollo. His photographs are part of important international art collections, and in 2012 he received the Konex Platinum Award in recognition of his career in photography.
In this interview with ArtGulf.ae, Marcos López shares his perspective on art, cultural identity, and the creative process, introducing international audiences to the vision of an artist who has transformed Latin American culture into an unmistakable visual universe.
Throughout your career, your work has developed a highly personal visual language, associated with series such as Pop Latino and Sub-realismo Criollo. How would you describe the evolution of your artistic vision, from your earliest photographs to your most recent work?
At times, I have felt tired and overwhelmed by the style I invented myself, as if I had created a Frankenstein that was devouring me. I was paralyzed and exhausted by the idea of taking photographs for several years, so I devoted myself to painting, drawing, and ceramics.
Now I have rediscovered my enthusiasm and am experimenting with AI, while also making portraits using black-and-white analog film, as I did in the 1990s.

Your images bring together color, humor, theatricality, and recognizable elements of Latin American popular culture. How do you construct this visual universe, and what role do staging and the choice of characters and objects play in your work?
Staging and the theatricality of the models are at the core of my work. My models are ordinary people whom I direct as if they were actors. I exaggerate the ritual of posing.
I have worked with the same art director and costume designer for 30 years. I also take photographs with my phone while traveling or walking through the streets of Buenos Aires, without any additional resources. In those cases, all I have is my direction of the subject.

Your photographs often occupy a distinctive space between reality and fiction. What interests you about exploring this boundary, and how does it influence the way viewers interpret your work?
I am interested in creating a new, theatricalized reality. This theatrical staging also documents a particular era.

Your work has been presented at international institutions and art venues. What has it been like to share your visual universe with audiences from different cultures, and which aspects of your work do you believe can inspire dialogue beyond its Argentine and Latin American context?
I believe my work is imbued with a sense of universal humanity. The expressions of the characters reveal an existential emptiness that can be perceived across different cultures.
That is how I see it, although I am not entirely sure, because I have never received feedback about how audiences in other parts of the world respond to my photographs.

After a career that has also explored cinema and other forms of artistic expression, what new explorations or projects are currently capturing your attention? Are there creative territories you would like to explore at this stage of your career?
I am currently focusing on theatrical performance and creating one-minute videos for Instagram Reels, which I share through my account, @marcoslopezvirtual.
