Art Basel Expands to MENA with Landmark Qatar Collaboration
In a transformative move for the global art world, Art Basel and its parent company MCH Group have officially announced a strategic partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+ to launch a new, international art fair in Doha, scheduled to debut in February 2026. This groundbreaking initiative marks the prestigious art fair’s first venture into the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, setting a new precedent for regional artistic engagement and global collaboration.
The new fair, entitled Art Basel Qatar, positions the Gulf state as a formidable player on the global art stage. The inaugural event will be hosted at M7, a dynamic creative center located in Doha’s Msheireb district, adjacent to the Doha Design District. The venue is already known as a hub for innovation and culture, making it a natural fit for an event of Art Basel’s caliber.
Art Basel Qatar will present a tightly curated selection of Modern and contemporary art, featuring works drawn from a rich and diverse mix of Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian artists, alongside international names. This fair promises not only to reflect the depth of artistic practice across these regions but also to offer a new platform for cultural exchange, dialogue, and discovery.
The visionary behind many of Qatar’s cultural initiatives, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, has played a central role in steering the nation’s creative renaissance. Under her guidance, Qatar has emerged as a thriving center for culture and creativity, home to world-renowned art collections, contemporary institutions, and acclaimed festivals dedicated to design, photography, and the visual arts.
Qatar Museums is currently leading the creation of landmark institutions such as the Art Mill Museum and the ambitious Lusail Museum, in addition to overseeing the development of a permanent Qatar Pavilion at Venice’s Giardini della Biennale — reflecting the country’s long-term commitment to cultural diplomacy and artistic excellence.
Art Basel Qatar is expected to become the fifth flagship event in Art Basel’s global portfolio, joining its established fairs in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris. This expansion not only enriches the Art Basel ecosystem but also accelerates opportunities for artists, galleries, patrons, and creative partners to connect, collaborate, and engage across borders.
This strategic initiative is more than an art fair; it is a cultural bridge — one that brings the world to Qatar and takes Qatari arts and culture to the world stage.
