Museums, Archaeological Sites Boost Tourism in Khareef

Salalah, Oman – As the Khareef (monsoon) season transforms the landscapes of the Dhofar Governorate into lush greenery, the region’s rich array of museums and archaeological sites is drawing a growing number of tourists. Alongside the cool, misty climate, visitors from across Oman and abroad are seeking to explore the area’s deep-rooted history and heritage.

Central to this increased tourism is the Museum of the Frankincense Land, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major hub for understanding the ancient trade routes and the significance of frankincense in the region. The museum showcases artifacts, interactive displays, and insights into Oman’s maritime past, offering a unique perspective on the Dhofar’s historical role as the “Land of Frankincense.”

Visitors are also flocking to other archaeological sites such as Al Baleed Archaeological Park, Sumhuram Archaeological Park, and Wubar, known for their remnants of ancient civilizations that flourished in southern Oman. These sites offer glimpses into the pre-Islamic era, with ruins and artifacts indicating a vibrant culture revolving around trade and commerce.

The influx of tourists during the Khareef has provided significant economic and cultural benefits. A local tourism official emphasized, “Khareef tourism plays an essential role in boosting the local economy and promoting Oman’s cultural heritage.” This season, the focus on eco-tourism and cultural tourism is encouraging visitors to look beyond the traditional natural attractions and explore Oman’s treasures of the past.

In tandem with the rise in visitors, initiatives have been launched to upgrade facilities and services at various sites, making them more accessible and visitor-friendly. Guides and information resources have been enhanced, and efforts to preserve these sites ensure that tourism growth remains sustainable.

By integrating the beauty of Khareef with the cultural depth of its landmarks, Salalah and the Dhofar region are steadily evolving as multi-dimensional tourist destinations. This synergy is cementing Oman’s reputation as a country where natural splendor meets profound history—drawing travelers keen on experiencing both in one journey.
